Slacklust: Coast to Crest - Dan Krauss

Slacklust: Coast to Crest - Dan Krauss
February 20, 2015 -  Five Ten

"Man it’s cold” I thought to myself as I pulled my head out of my sleeping bag. “Is it morning yet?” No... It was still pitch black outside. I did this every hour for the entire night. David’s booming snores filled the pop-up camper on top of the van. Everything inside the tent was wet from freezing condensation. When I finally saw the frosted grass turn orange, peeking out of the tent's air vent, I begrudgingly got out of my now-ice-covered sleeping bag and pulled on my puffy jacket. My whole body shuddered as I climbed out of the...

Climbing Trip to the Mythic Cliff with Colette McInerney

Climbing Trip to the Mythic Cliff with Colette McInerney
February 04, 2015 -

This summer came together much like most of the best things do, completely unplanned. I had been blabbing pretty insistently about a girl’s trip to Ceuse in an attempt to “put things out into the universe”, you know concentrating my “energy” and all that. But alas the trip came to fruition while the perfect limestone cliff was the last thing on my mind. Now almost 6 months later and I find myself looking back on a summer full of Ceuse memories, from the once daunting turned therapeutic hike, to the intimidating climbs now proud achievements, to the once unspoken...

The Last Foreigner - Bernd Zangerl

The Last Foreigner - Bernd Zangerl
January 04, 2015 -

It’s already the sixth time that I am coming back to this mountain village at the foot of „Shivalinga“. By now, the inhabitants have gotten to know me, and also know what my friends and I am looking for in this remote region of the Himalaya. They can’t understand it though. The people in the village are adjusted to the scarceness of the land and its climate. They try to survive in these rough mountains of which they had to laboriously conquer every arable square meter of land. The only acreage that they cannot reclaim are the...

Sweet Southern Sandstone - Angela Payne

Sweet Southern Sandstone - Angela Payne
December 14, 2014 -  Angela Payne

October & November were the months of sandstone for me. Sandstone is hands down my favorite type of rock, although it isn’t the rock I climb on most often. I grew up climbing on sandstone, and maybe that’s part of the reason I love it so much. The style of climbing that sandstone creates does not always play to my strengths, and sometimes quite the opposite. But something about it is just appealing to me – the aesthetics, the texture, the incredible fun it almost always seems to lead to. The sandstone that I...

My Last ABS Season - Zoe Steinberg

My Last ABS Season - Zoe Steinberg
December 08, 2014 -  Zoe Steinberg

There have definitely been times where I’ve neglected to update this as much as I should, but I think the time span of when I last posted until now definitely takes the prize. It has been a hugely busy fall, being both my first semester of college and my last season competing in youth bouldering comps, and I have been trying to make the most out of both of these opportunities. So far, everything has been working out well, so I’ll try to keep this short and summarize everything.

Trad Climbing in Zion - Angela Payne

Trad Climbing in Zion - Angela Payne
November 03, 2014 -

I’ve spent a good portion of 2014 competing and bouldering, as I have done for many years. Last week, however, I stepped away from the boulders and competitions and into a different realm of climbing for a moment. I wanted to learn some trad climbing basics, so that if I find myself in a beautiful place in the future with the opportunity to climb something bigger, I might eventually be able to take advantage of it. To begin the learning process, I headed to Zion National Park with a fellow Mountain Hardwear athlete, Cheyne Lempe. ...
