Plastic & Rock: ‘Tis the Season…for both? - Angela Payne

Plastic & Rock: ‘Tis the Season…for both? - Angela Payne
April 14, 2014 -

There comes a time every year when the weather begins to improve, the snow begins to melt, and my motivation to get outside begins to build.  That time is now.  But, as a person who truly loves climbing on rocks AND plastic, this always creates an interesting conflict of interests.  Since the competition season doesn’t ever really end, the Spring is the time when I often feel like I don’t have enough time to stay in shape for plastic while also pursuing outdoor goals.

My life has been pretty chaotic these last couple months! I really can’t believe how much time as flown by. I’ve been incredibly busy and consumed with activities; it’s going to be hard to adequately sum it all up! Since I’ve last blogged I’ve been to quite a few comps and have been engaged in a number of adventures. IT HAS BEEN A WIRHLWIND!!!! But now that I’m on spring break, I have time to catch my breath, relax and reflect. It’s so wonderful to finely have some free time!

The two weeks before nationals this year I went to stone summit for a pre-nationals training camp. This was my third year doing it and it's amazing how much it helps. When I climbed there the first day I felt like I had absolutely no endurance and thought I was screwed for nationals... But, after two weeks in that gym, you get endurance whether you want it or not.

After all season of training and comps I had these last 25 days to climb at divisionals, train, and then compete at nationals. This ropes season was my favorite of all of them. I had a fun time competing and training the whole way through. This ropes season was awesome and I cant wait to do it again (after bouldering season J).

After 60+ hours of international travel, taking me from the valleys of Switzerland through the French countryside and three different airports, I found myself sitting under the now unfamiliar tread wall at The Spot Gym in Boulder, CO doing my best to prepare for the 2013 SCS National Championships which was only 2 days away. I still wasn’t quite sure how I was going to manage to hang on to plastic holds for more than a few moves after spending the past month getting nice and comfortable on the short, powerful, textured granite boulders of Ticino, Switzerland. ...

This past weekend I competed in the SCS Open Nationals at Movement Climbing + Fitness in Boulder, Co. I didn't prepare for this competition as much as I would have liked but results showed I was in pretty decent shape! Friday evening was Qualifiers and my initial impression was the routes looked a little bit easier than last years. Last year I finished 14th and my whole goal for the competition was to best that. I didn't warm up enough for the first climb but I manged to finish the route! Already an improvement than last year! After...
