Ames Ice Hose - Andrew Plagens

Ames Ice Hose - Andrew Plagens
March 31, 2014 -

I see the spindrift funneling down the route from above, all I can do is cinch my hood up and wait. Whooooossssshhhhhh! Everything goes white; I can’t even see my hands holding onto my ice tools. I’m right in the middle of the second pitch of the notorious and ultra classic Ames Ice Hose in Telluride. I look down at the belay and see my partner Bryce, huddled at the belay counting the minutes until I finish the pitch so he can stop freezing his butt off in a never ending spindrift shower. The snow doesn’t sting as bad...

Rock and Ice photo camp 2013 - Jon Cardwell

I love the climbing community. This group is not always visible, especially with today's new wave of indoor climbing gyms, filling up with eager beginners. Its sometimes lost, but there's no doubt of it's existence. Last week I spent five days in Redstone with an awesome group of climbers and photographers both pro and amateur. These camps are instructional workshops developed to teach, instruct and critique eager photographers how to shoot rock climbing for the publishers. I've been to a Rock and Ice photo camp once, a couple years ago in Rifle, Colorado and while it...

Rock & Ice Camp - Natural Games! - Mayan Smith-Gobat
July 11, 2012 -

My last few days in the USA this spring were spent at the Rock & Ice Photo Camp... I did not quite know what to expect, and so came prepared for anything and everything. It all began by a late night trip out to Aspen – Three very tired girls (Sasha, Jessa and I) sleeping in the back of the 5.10 van, with Ronnie and Rich as our chafferers! In the morning we arrived at our very picturesque camp site to be greeted by a very keen crew of amateur and pro photographers, Rock & Ice staff and pro...

A few weeks ago I went out to Independence Pass, CO for the Rock and Ice Photo Camp. It was a great three days of climbing and hanging out with up and coming outdoor photographers as well as professionals. I had a ton of fun climbing with friends and being involved in the Photo Camp. On my way home I was able to take a day to climb in Vedauwoo with the off-width masters Jackson and Scarpelli. It was a great day of climbing and learning how to get through off-width climbs.

Rock & Ice Photo Shoot in Independence Pass, CO - Sasha DiGiulian

Rock & Ice Photo Shoot in Independence Pass, CO - Sasha DiGiulian

Following my return from Spain I flew to Colorado for a photoshoot with Rock and Ice. The chosen location was Independence Pass, a breathtakingly beautiful location near Aspen, Colorado. Independence Pass is a high-altitude region of the Colorado rockies that boasts incredibly vast ranges of granite cliffs, rolling mountains, and scattered pools of mountain run-off water. During the week, budding photographers learned from Outdoor Photography Masters, David Clifford and Keith Ladzinski. I was one of the “model subjects” for the photographers to take photos of while climbing. The group dynamics were great and I was thoroughly impressed...

The photo issue of Rock and Ice will be landing in your mailboxes shortly. The photo issue is always my favorite and this year’s does not disappoint. To my surprise there is a full-page, black and white, photo of me towards the end of the photo section. The caption says the photo was taken on Apocalypse in Rifle, CO. This particular shot however, was actually taken on Simply Read, the route two left of Apocalypse. I know this, because it’s a route I’ll never forget, a route that challenged me for two seasons before finally, and unexpectedly, coming together...
