Final Days in Guadalcazar - Urs Moosmuller

Final Days in Guadalcazar - Urs Moosmuller
April 11, 2014 -  Urs Moosmuller

Most of my trip to Mexico has been spent climbing in Guadalcazar, Mexico. This place has captured my heart and has been an area where I pushed myself the hardest. There are so many great memories from every aspect of living in this little town. It feels very strange to leave after being so comfortable in one place. I have learned so much about myself through this part of my trip and several projects have forced me to really evaluate myself as a person and push myself to success.

I’m always amazed at the time I spend preparing for a BASE trip in comparison to the time I’ll actually spend in flight for it. It’s not uncommon I spend over twenty hours planning a trip that only yields about three-minutes of flight time. Hours are spent on logistical preparation, travel time, location and exit-point scouting and hiking. On paper, the time spent planning for a flight vs. flight time doesn’t seem to add up, yet time and time again those few seconds in flight are so potent it makes it’s all worth it.

Going to Peñoles always gets me motivated because it's safe to say that it's one of the places I've been going to the most, and the amount of projects accumulating grows. Each year more and more people show up and it looks like this year won't be the exception. A lot of climbers, many of which are very good friends, have plans for coming. You could say this area was my high school and university, to which I've put a lot of time and effort into.

February 10, 2014 -

Over the winter holidays, I traveled to Torreon, Mexico to celebrate with my girlfriend’s parents. We stayed at her families house in Lerdo, a city next to Torreon. Northern Mexico is very different from the central part of Mexico and is a huge desert with beautiful hills and warm weather. The climbing scene in the area is very small and there are only a handful of active climbers who have found and developed a very beautiful limestone area called La Presa. The local climbing area is a 45 minute drive to the west of the city in the hills...

The next cave we visited is a massive 80m cave deep in the wilderness surrounding Guadalacazar. The cave holds the largest amount of routes and some of the best. The bottom of the cave is filled with hundreds of stalagtites ranging from very small stalagtites to massive 4m long stalagtites. Just seeing this impressive natural phenomenon is a unique experience. At the deepest part of the cave you can find inscriptions from the local people dating back to the 1800’s. The cave was originally used for ceremonial purposes for the recently deceased, but now sees very little attention and...
