This fall, I've finally been able to get outside enough to not consider myself a full time gym rat. I've been hanging out at local bouldering areas like Horse Pens 40 and Little Rock City almost every weekend and I've been able to find some long term projects. Luckily the weather still hasn't turned very cold here, so climbing outside is still possible, even for someone as wimpy as I am when it comes to cold. The third Triple Crown, held at Horse Pens 40, was a great finale to a great circuit this year. The weather, which many were complaining was too hot, was perfect in my opinion, and I was psyched to crush some awesome problems.
Horse Pens 40 in Alabama was one of the first places I ever bouldered outside. I remember going there for one of the first Mortal Kombat competitions at least 10 years ago. I still carry an old sock in my chalk bucket that was handed out during that competition for chalking up the bubbly slopers for which Horse Pens is now famous. I always thought the sandstone at Horse Pens was amazing, and after traveling to many other areas around the country and world, I still think Horse Pens has the best sandstone I have ever seen. ...
