Climbing in College - Kyle Francis

Climbing in College - Kyle Francis
November 03, 2013 -

When you think of keeping up with climbing, Texas A&M is generally not the school that comes to mind. Its around no rock, and its rec center is a sorry excuse for a playground, and I was beyond worried when I first got here and realized what I was dealing with.As far as the climbing goes, I have been surprised. The route setters at the schools boulder wall are awesome, and the hold quality is really good. They max out around v8 so I generally will spend one day when they set new boulders and try to do every...

It was so cool to have something like this come full circle. I found and cleaned this boulder in 2006 with friends from the region, Kuba and Yves. I brushed tons of possible lines, notably Scarred for Life 8b+, which I eventually managed that season, but the prize rig at the "Fuck the System" mega roof was the first line you walked up to.

With the quarter well under way, while everything from school to climbing has become busy, it has all been a ton of fun. Even though I haven’t been outside as much this past month, I have been focused on training, competing, setting, and coaching. A couple weeks ago, Planet Granite had their finale Bloc Party bouldering competition of the year. We had fifteen Stanford Climbing Team members there, which was great! Everyone was motivated and climbed really well, and we all had a lot of fun. I went to finals with Ethan Pringle, Andy Lamb, Mirko Caballero, and Patrick...

Farewell Summer! - Ian Anderson

Farewell Summer! - Ian Anderson
November 01, 2013 -  Ian Anderson

Summer has (finally) faded into fall here in the Midwest. With the change of season comes a transition from deep water soloing to sport climbing, and eventually bouldering. Despite the sometimes oppressive heat, summer is one of the best seasons for climbing in Southern Illinois thanks to the top notch deep water soloing at Kinkaid Lake. The rock at the lake is steep, overhung and highly featured sandstone. The texture is perfect for hot weather and wet shoes. Did I mention the climbing is steep? There is no better way to beat the...

I love having so many amazing opportunities in my life... But sometimes it can also be a little frustrating not having as flexible a schedule as I used to have! If anything it is just a good motivation to get better though...As I mentioned previously, my trip to Yosemite Valley was rudely interrupted by the US government - What was meant to be five week trip turned into just over two weeks. My time in the Valley was super productive, but I had to leave and returned just as the Park was reopened to the public. Unfortunately, this did...

Summer in Colorado is an amazing time. The alpine climbing areas are teeming with motivated people projecting old and new climbs alike. The trails are packed with outdoor enthusiasts enjoying the breathtaking vistas that are the Rocky Mountains. This summer season was cut short. There were devastating floods closing most climbing areas. This was merely an inconvenience when compared to the devastation the flood caused to homes, roads, and businesses. But for every story of destruction there was another story of the generosity, heroism, and kindness of people in the climbing community. It made me thankful to be a...
