NOSTALGICA - Bernd Zangerl

NOSTALGICA - Bernd Zangerl

NOSTÁLGICA I love granite ! It is absolutely my favorite rocktype for bouldering. Usually the lines on granite rocks are so evident and pure, or sometimes just not possible ever to be climbed because of one "missing link". Without a doubt the sandstone in South Africa or Fontainebleau also offers world class bouldering, as well as in other areas which I don’t even know yet! BUT I started bouldering in Ticino, so this is maybe the reason for my keen preference for granite.

This past weekend was my 18th birthday! Somehow or other, it ended up coinciding with ABS Open Nationals, which were held in Colorado Springs on February 24th-25th. This year, I put a little more pressure on myself to do well, considering my abysmal performance last year (see post) which involved a 30th place finish and a badly sprained ankle. My goal this year was to make it to semifinals, which also happened to be on my birthday (February 25th). I knew the competition would be tough, and that I would have to work on my weaknesses in order to...

I've just returned to the good ol' USA from a wild and overhanging bigwall adventure in the Venezuelan jungle. It was a crazy trip full of machetes, hunger, and whippers. As I write this, I am about 3 Thin Mints away from killing a box of girl scout cookies. God Bless America.

Overall, from fit to finish, I felt pretty good this weekend. I could tell right when I landed that I was at a significant disadvantage due to the change in altitude - I was winded walking off the plane. I tried my friend’s trick of doing some sprints immediately after landing, but it is hard to tell if it helped. I proceeded to follow a high water and lower protein diet for the day preceding the comp to help my body acclimate to the altitude.

Pretty late blog post... but DARKHORSE! Championship! in boston was crazy! A good amount of pro competitors showed up in boston for the comp, such as Dwoods, Carlo, ROBBY D, ADJ for the guys, leading to a very difficult qualifying red point round. even though I didn't do well enough to qualify for finals it was almost as good just watching the finals event unfold. with 4 finals problem, Daniel woods took 1st flashing all problems, then ROB D, this guy is one of my favorite guys to watch and to climb with, so much sike! in 2nd with...

Clear Creek Canyon and Shelf Road - Urs Moosmuller

Clear Creek Canyon and Shelf Road - Urs Moosmuller
March 01, 2012 -

Clear Creek Canyon has a reputation for having soft short routes on ok quality rock with the exception of some hidden gems. When you first enter the canyon all you see is choss. To the left and right there is nothing but steep hills and loose rock. But as you progress forward you start seeing small cliffs with unique features and good sized walls. The day before planning our day trip to CCC we checked the weather and saw a high of 61 degrees, but didn’t check the wind forecast.
