Rope Season Starts For Real - Zoe Steinberg

Rope Season Starts For Real - Zoe Steinberg
June 13, 2012 -  Zoe Steinberg

Finally done with school for the year! I’m officially a junior in high school…I can’t believe it, it feels like yesterday I was starting as a freshman. And what better way to celebrate than by qualifying for the SCS youth nationals in both sport and speed climbing this July! Last Friday, I drove up to Massachusetts the day before divisionals started with my mom and brother. We made a stop in Boston to check out a college, then drove another 2 hours into a town called Hadley, near a bunch more colleges, and also where...

Ode to Car Camping in Style - Jess Taverna

Since I first started backpacking late in high school, I’ve spent many (more than I can count) nights sleeping outside the confines of a four-walled permanent structure. I’ve had the pleasure--and pain--of crashing outdoors in all manner of ways: from the sparseness of nothing more than a sleeping bag and plastic rain tarp to the fairly cush (and prolific among climbers) foam-lined truck bed platform. I tend to think I’ve paid my dues, hauling tent+sleeping bag+sleeping pad (which were unpacked, set up, taken down, and repacked daily) on week-long backpacking trips; sleeping for three weeks straight in an increasingly...

Canadian National - Routes - Melissa Lacasse

Canadian National - Routes - Melissa Lacasse
June 12, 2012 -

Since my last blog entry, after the Canadian bouldering championship I have had to work a lot. I knew the difficulty (routes) national was coming up 4 weeks after the bouldering national (we were lucky this year with both nationals being held in Montreal) and I was hoping to train hard in between, but I could not seem to be able to make time for it. So I did what I could, when I could. I did resistance training on the bouldering wall because it takes less time than rope climbing. I even wondered if it was worth it...

Scarface - Sean Bailey

Finally having multiple full days of climbing at Smith Rocks over Memorial Day weekend, I sent Scarface (5.14a/8b+). It was my first 5.14, so I am extremely psyched. The climb is known for its long moves and bad feet, and it never gives you a break until you clip the chains. Scarface can be broken up into 2 main sections. The first is the powerful, 5.14 climbing, with a crux at the 3rd bolt where you have to do a long pull to a mono, and then a long pull off the mono with bad feet to...

Training in Italy - Edyta Ropek

Training in Italy - Edyta Ropek
June 11, 2012 -

So I started my preparation to the summer world cups. Few days ago me and my boyfriend, we arrived in Vale di Daone, 1700 amsl somewhere in the Italian Alps. Weather is not so nice, raining most of the time, so it’s hard to find two hours to do training.

This morning I leave till July 14th to go rock climbing! We are going to the red for three weeks, then off to Atlanta for nationals, then Florida to hang out. What you’re looking at in the photo above is what happens when 13 ropes (60-70m) get wet in our trailer and need to be laid out, that’s about five feet in width and about 800m of rope……We had our divisional championships this weekend. After Qualifiers I was in first by about 5 holds, so I was feeling pretty good going into finals. Finals, however, did not go so...
