Perhaps skiing is the perfect cross training to get my legs stronger and ultimately make me a better climber. But if not, at least skiing is a whole lot of fun!

My favorite “course” when I was at CU was the physiology colloquium. It wasn’t a typical class in that it only occurred once a week and wasn’t just for the students but also to keep the faculty up to date on the latest and greatest research going on. Every week a different CU faculty member brought in a presenter from around the world that does similar work to give a short talk on their research. The topics varied greatly across the semester spanning topics like biomechanics, exercise physiology, sleep, immunology, and stress physiology.

We spent the first day at the Happy Boulders focusing on getting as many problems in as possible and enjoying the warm 60 degree weather. The second day we headed to the Buttermilks and focused on some of the classic mind control high balls. In just two days, Siebe Vanhee, George Ullrich, Sam Farnsworth, and myself are embarking on an expedition deep into the Venezuelan Jungle in search of the mysterious "steepest wall on earth." The fabled Amuri Tepui boasts what may be the most overhanging big wall on the planet, and armed with some Neon kneebarring pads and a few pairs of downturned Team Five Tens, we hope to drop-knee oor way to the top of this monster!

I'll be the first to admit it: I am a born-and-bred gym rat. For 5 or 6 years I climbed almost exclusively on plastic, and even afterwards only in New England. But once I moved to Colorado a whole new world opened up to me, including the opportunity for a trip to Hueco Tanks in El Paso, Texas!

Once I arrived in Seattle I was overwhelmed by how beautiful Seattle was, even though I was drenched by the rain. Soon enough I came back to reality, there is a comp tomorrow morning but not just any comp.. Division 1 Championship for ABS season. This was the first time that there is a Divisions for ABS season (usually it is regionals then to nationals).

A few years back Kevin Jorgeson established one of the hardest boulder problems on the North Coast. This boulder problem is known as Stigmata, and Kevin gave it an opinion grade on 8a.nu of (V12). It was featured in Chuck Fryberger's film Pure, under the name The Blue Schist Project. The crux move of Stigmata requires grabbing a right hand quarter pad crimp and a left hand side pull, getting your feet up and making a close to full extension reach to a positive edge halfway up the 15 ft. boulder....

The final of the German Boulder series in 2011 took place in Überlingen, a nice place next to the Bodensee. It was traditional. Unfortunately, the weather was not as good as the last years, so the organizers had some problems with the competition walls. The holds were wet; also the mats were wet, so that the climbers got wet shoes, when they started in a boulder problem. The atmosphere between the climbers was not good. The competition was a disaster.

I was very happy because the weather was very nice for rock climbing the last 2,5 Monthes. Much, much better than the last two years. So didn’t spend much time indoor and drove to my projects very often. That was a lot of fun all the time! A lot of night climbing during the week with headlamps and scary boulders with a lot of crash pads. Also I was very lucky to send some awesome projects! I will write later about this...

Go big or go home? Yes!!! This season is starting out as the season of highballs. I've been subconsciously attracted to the tallest, raddest boulders around!Every climb I've been doing lately has been at least 18 feet off the deck, it's exhilarating to be pushing my limits at such heights and my sights are only being set higher.

It’s a new semester here at Tech and time to get going again, but of course, not just in school. It is now officially the season for a whole lot of big bouldering comps. The small, local comps are over with, and now it’s time to kick it into high gear.

I competed in my first competition when I was 11 and I can’t even count how many comps I’ve done since then. At times I have become disillusioned with competing and have even walked away from the world of comp climbing all together for brief spells. But I always find myself being drawn back in, because, to put it simply, I love it.
