The Bouldering World Cup in Vail is always one of my favorite events of the year. The competition is part of a larger event, formerly known as the Teva Mountain Games, now known as the GoPro Mountain Games. I remember the days when the competition at the Teva Games was held on a small mushroom-shaped boulder in a parking lot, so it is pretty neat to see how much the event has grown over the years. Now, the World Cup attracts an incredibly strong field of competitors from various countries.

When school gets out and the warm Colorado sun begins to shine, I have only one thing on my mind: Alpine bouldering. I headed up to Rocky Mountain National Park for this first time of the season on May 18, and as usual, I was not disappointed. Though last winter’s snow was so plentiful that it seemed it would never fully melt, the boulders were completely dry and and spirits were high.

I boarded a plane to Tokyo and stayed just long enough to get over my jet lag, overwhelm my senses, and expand my perceptions before returning to the other side of the world. In the few days I spent in Japan I was immersed in one of the most interesting and engaging cultures I've ever experienced. I'm in Joe's Valley, Utah, for the second time this month. Shannon is making breakfast in the van (sausage, eggs and broccoli). I've got a hot cup of coffee and the air is crisp and clear. If I weren't in such poor physical shape, today would probably turn out to be a fantastic climbing day.

The whole city stretches for 573 square miles and sits in a dried up lake basin at an altitude of 7,350 ft. There is a ton of bouldering located in the city and around the surrounding hills. The rock is mostly volcanic with some granite areas scattered around and the problems range from V0 to V12. During my stay in the city we checked out two areas close by. The first area is a volcanic cliff line at UNAM which is...

As I write, it’s snowing. This past weekend it was almost 80 degrees. I don’t envy Colorado meteorologists. Like typical Colorado, the weather has been fluctuating between sunny at 75 degrees and 19 degrees with two feet of snow. In between spring snow storms I’ve been searching out dry areas to climb. By sticking close to home I have lucked out and been able to climb despite the massive snow fall we’ve been experiencing. Fortunately, close to home crags include: RMNP, Elkland, Red Feather Lakes, Horsetooth, Poudre Canyon, and Carter Lake.
