After some unseasonably snowy weather, Spring has finally come to Colorado! I have been trying to take advantage of the mostly gorgeous weather to get outside and climb. I have been working at a new job recently, and I am finding that when I do have time to climb, I am much more motivated to do so. As a result, I have actually managed to get some great climbing done over the past few months.

This past weekend I stepped out of my comfort zone and competed in the SCS Nationals in Boulder, CO. Sport climbing is not something that is completely foreign to me, as I was exclusively a sport climber for 5 years of my youth, but it is definitely not something I do very often anymore. So, I knew that this event would be a challenge for me. Given that and the fact that it was at Movement, just a few blocks from my house, it was hard to resist.

I decided to kick off the winter break with one of my favorite competitions- The Dark Horse. As always it was held at my home gym, MetroRock in Boston. However, it was a much different competition than previous years- the field of girls was by far the strongest ever at the comp. There were at least 12 girls who were strong enough to climb in finals, which made the red point very crucial since there were only 8 places in finals. I got to...

Totaling an estimated 75,000 people at the event over the course of three days, The Dominion Riverrock Festival was without a doubt a huge success. Joyfully, for me, too! For the second year in a row, the Dominion Boulder Bash took form with unique “cage-like” volumes composing two steep, impressive structures. The competition began on Friday with Qualifiers in the evening, then Saturday were Quarterfinals in the morning and Semifinals at night, followed by a fourth round (Finals) on Sunday. Hey Everyone!I'm happy to say that on March 23, 24, and 25, I will be at Mesa Rim Climbing and Fitness Center with Angie Payne, Daniel Woods, and Ethan Pringle! Aside from being great friends, this is a class act gathering of athletes who are all super stoked to work and climb with the community in Southern California.

The 2012 Bouldering Nationals, held in Colorado Springs, Colorado, saw one of the strongest fields that North America could have provided. I was fortunate enough to score a press pass for the event, and got a pretty edifying, behind-the-scenes perspective on what is going through the minds of a number of Five Ten athletes as they line up time and effort for the annual showdown.

Last weekend was the final Dark Horse comp. It was amazing, as expected. It was great to be back home again and competing with so many people I haven’t seen in a while, including a bunch of people new to the Dark Horse competitions. Both the women and men categories were totally stacked- Angie Payne, Daniel Woods, Kashia Pietras, Rob D., Isabelle Faus, and Alex David Johnson just to name a few.

This Autumn for me has been the busiest one of my life. I kicked things off in early September in Sonoma, CA for a clinic instructors' course. Our goal was to tear down climbing; moves, techniques, training ideas, competition strategies, efficient teaching skills, all leading towards producing the best clinics possible. With the additional help of Beth Rodden, Emmy Surma, Rusty Klassen and Andrew McDermott we were able to come up with an incredible and unique clinic program that we could pack up and take with us like Cirque du Soleil.
