During the past few weeks I have been focused on my business of dealing antiques. This is a family learned trade that my grandfather started in the late 60's. My father is now a full time antique dealer, as is my brother and myself. We sell many of our things on ebay (from early Stanley Planes to 1900 Baseball Photos to Miner's Lanterns and beyond). We also setup at shows during the spring through fall seasons.

May 1st, 2010 was the first round of the Gravity East Series (GES) in Massanutten, VA. It was the first time the whole team got together at a race and for the first time the pits/bikes/jerseys were all put together... We have created a monster team. Everyone on the team gets along amazing and we all have awesome personalities (one of the big reasons why I picked the riders who that I did).

"We are really excited to have been able to collect some great photos of The Chase in action! This was also a great opportunity to push the shoe to perform in ways we have literally never tried before. We look forward to continuing working with you to promote the grippiest kicks in the world!"

Thanks Matthew, Awesome shots!

The prestigious brand 5 Ten is going to be supporting me all this year during 2010. The best brand for flat pedal shoes in the World, with a fit and a comfort outside of the norm. They are now going to also release a model for SPD. I'm waiting to be able to try a pair and see the quality of the 5.10 SPD.

Phillip Schaal posted a new video on Deadpoint Mag

"I wanted to film some of my favorite problems at Mortar Rock in the Berkeley Hills.  Mortar Rock as always been a special place for me.  I would spend almost every day there during the summers I spent at my father’s house.  The rock is sharp and crumbly but the moves are fun and the atmosphere is great.  I still love going back to my old stomping grounds."

So the comp season is starting to wind down but the 4 largest comps still remain! I'm on my way back to Banff to spend my summer intensely training for adult tour de bloc nationals, youth route climbing nationals, the Mammut bouldering championships at the retailers show, and youth World championships in September. The comp year is going extremely well for me! I'll be heading into Tour de Bloc nationals with the top point score of all the open males.

The Roc comp was a blast. I had an amazing time. The red-point style qualifying round was the only down part for me. That is totally a personal thing though, the way they organized it worked really well and it every one seemed to be having fun, but I would have just rather done a on-sight style comp instead.

On April 27 Isaac Caldiero made the third ascent of the amazing highball/solo Ambrosia (v11) on the Grandpa Peabody at the Buttermilks. The impending stormy weather presented an extra challenge. It was a warm, but windy day with a mist of rain occasionally drifting in from the mountains to dampen aspirations. But that light intermittent rain evaporated as fast as it arrived and Isaac was motivated by the cooling of the breeze that provided conditions far better than he'd seen over the last warm week.

The Earth Treks Roc Comp was this past weekend, just in time to get really into competition mode before I head off to Europe for the World Cups. The format was similar to IFSC and unique to any other comps we host in the US aside from Vail, and it made the whole atmosphere relaxing and fun. I also can't say that I've ever climbed in front of a more psyched crowd! :)

Mark Busby, formerly of Bigstone, Five Ten’s representing agent in the U.K., has been hired as Five Ten’s new European Sales Director, effective June 15. 2010.  Bigstone owner, Andy Bowman, will continue to service Five Ten’s accounts in the UK. “It’s a big move for Mark, and we wish him all the very best as he ‘leaves the nest’ for his European adventure,” says Bowman. “We will miss him here at Bigstone.”

"Five Ten made its mark in the climbing community by producing some of the stickiest rubber on the market. Since then, the company has expanded its line to include everything from hipster high-tops that cater to downhill mountain bikers to free-running kicks that transform urban environs into an athlete's jungle gym."

Finally spring time started, temperatures are warm enough to ride in t-shirts and the first comps already took place in Europe. What is the best feeling ever? For me it was definitely when I landed my cork 720 for the first time on dirt at the Best Trick contest in Vienna. It took a lot of work and time last winter and now it‘s on and one of my new tricks I can show at all the comps.
