Phillip Schaal posted a new video on Deadpoint Mag

"I wanted to film some of my favorite problems at Mortar Rock in the Berkeley Hills. Mortar Rock as always been a special place for me. I would spend almost every day there during the summers I spent at my father’s house. The rock is sharp and crumbly but the moves are fun and the atmosphere is great. I still love going back to my old stomping grounds."

So the comp season is starting to wind down but the 4 largest comps still remain! I'm on my way back to Banff to spend my summer intensely training for adult tour de bloc nationals, youth route climbing nationals, the Mammut bouldering championships at the retailers show, and youth World championships in September. The comp year is going extremely well for me! I'll be heading into Tour de Bloc nationals with the top point score of all the open males.

Mostly I've been pounding nails to build a future training ground for my friends Wills and Lisa. Fortunately I've been able to take the good days of crispy temps and head out bouldering at one of the most inspiring area's in the world, The Buttermilks. My main goal was to check out Kevin Jorgeson's most recent addition to the highball realm, Ambrosia V11. Well I am happy to say that I got to do more...

The Roc comp was a blast. I had an amazing time. The red-point style qualifying round was the only down part for me. That is totally a personal thing though, the way they organized it worked really well and it every one seemed to be having fun, but I would have just rather done a on-sight style comp instead.

On April 27 Isaac Caldiero made the third ascent of the amazing highball/solo Ambrosia (v11) on the Grandpa Peabody at the Buttermilks. The impending stormy weather presented an extra challenge. It was a warm, but windy day with a mist of rain occasionally drifting in from the mountains to dampen aspirations. But that light intermittent rain evaporated as fast as it arrived and Isaac was motivated by the cooling of the breeze that provided conditions far better than he'd seen over the last warm week.

The Earth Treks Roc Comp was this past weekend, just in time to get really into competition mode before I head off to Europe for the World Cups. The format was similar to IFSC and unique to any other comps we host in the US aside from Vail, and it made the whole atmosphere relaxing and fun. I also can't say that I've ever climbed in front of a more psyched crowd! :)

"Five Ten made its mark in the climbing community by producing some of the stickiest rubber on the market. Since then, the company has expanded its line to include everything from hipster high-tops that cater to downhill mountain bikers to free-running kicks that transform urban environs into an athlete's jungle gym."

Finally spring time started, temperatures are warm enough to ride in t-shirts and the first comps already took place in Europe. What is the best feeling ever? For me it was definitely when I landed my cork 720 for the first time on dirt at the Best Trick contest in Vienna. It took a lot of work and time last winter and now it‘s on and one of my new tricks I can show at all the comps.

Spring in Colorado.. Snow, rain, sleet, hail, all in a 2-minute space, followed by sunshine. The days look nice, with all that clear, end-of-winter light and moisture in the air. Everything is greener, which gives kinda-dry Colorado a sort of European feel. A lot of time is spent searching for boulders in between the precipitation; patience is pretty key this time of year.

This was a great weekend for 5.10’s athletes.

Alex Puccio took first place, closely followed by team-mate Alex Johnson. And we applaud our new team members, Francesca Metcalf and Isabelle Faus in 4th and 5th.

Paul Robinson was a very close 2nd place. We’re proud of our team! We had a very strong showing, with Chris Webb Parsons, Ethan Pringle, Matt Bosley, Julian Bautista, Carlo Traversi, Dave Wetmore and Charlotte Jouette-Bosley all making strong showings.

Thanks Team!

Five Ten® Yosemite Jeans have a new logo that doubles as a drink coaster. The goal is to cut down on hang tag waste--we noticed that 100% of all hangtags end up in the trash. So we designed a cool tag that doubles as a drink coaster (we recommend removing it from your jeans before placing it under a drink). But, don't expect to buy it in China!

I'm finally done with school... at least for the summer. That means 3 months in Colorado. As the weather here in the Southeast has deteriorated, I have been spending more and more time in the gym. I've even met one of my training goals. I can now do one arm hangs galore! But after 6 weeks of training it's time to get back outside.
