After a wonderful summer in the beautiful Canadian Rockies, it’s back to the grind at school. One more year, and I will be a real live Nurse. I grew up 45min from the Canadian Rockies, and my family used to drive out there every darned weekend to climb or ski or hike or camp among the majestic peaks. Going back this summer, I realized that it had been years since I spent any quality time climbing the lovely lime-stone faces the Rockies has to offer. Needless to say I was pretty darned psyched to get a part...

Some of you may have noticed that jamespearsonclimbing.com recently went on permanent vacation. My website was always held just a little out of my reach by some friends back in the UK, which is part of the reason it had not seen an update for over 2 years! It was looking tired, was well past its best, and finally... well lets just say it died.

Hold back the tears, all is not lost, for out of the ashes a phoenix will rise!

News from the off-width capital of the world.

Lots and lots of bouldering in the cool air has been the motivation lately. I've been working on several projects at once. One is The Project Project in the Vedauwoo area. Basically a few of us made a list of all the unclimbed lines and unrepeated lines in the greater Vedauwoo area and have been laying siege on them. It has been a bit warm at times, slowing down some progress as tips get too soft for the sharp holds here, but progress has been made.

Brazil has been an incredible experience and one of those trips that you just never forget. Throughout the month I was able to see and climb at the areas, Sao Thome Das Letras, Sao Bento, Ubatuba, Serre de Piedade, Sabara, and Cocalzinho. This is one of the main reasons why I prefer traveling to staying year round at a home base. I feel there is so much more opportunity to learn, to meet people, to listen and speak foreign language, to climb...

It doesn’t make you forget your troubles entirely, but it sure takes your mind off them for a while. Inspired by recent events, I had a deep desire to do everything when I arrived. No way was I going to keep my feet close to the ground this time. I needed to go up, as high as I could, to be nearer to the stars. The first thing we did was summit Cathedral Peak in Tuolumne. Being back in Switzerland is a dream come true for me. It has been 2 years since my first trip here. I unfortunately left this amazing country with a cast on my left foot. My first trip was bitter-sweet as I was only able to climb for a couple of weeks before injuring myself severely enough that I had to fly back to the States two months before my scheduled departure.

New route climbed at Stanage.

Yesterday afternoon, i managed to climb another new grit route. I was pretty psyched doing this route as it was at Stanage, and it always has to be a privilage to climb a new route on one of the most famous gritstone edges. It also made it better because this one was infact excellent, and thats hard to find on Stanage where almost every inch of rock has been climbed!

In the last 8 weeks I can count the times I have touched rock on one hand! I have been locked away indoors, pulling on small bits of wood and plastic in preparation for going on a ten week trip to Fontainebleau and Switzerland. The relentless rain and humid conditions also make it difficult to muster up the motivation to head outside. However last Thursday three of us decided to head to North Wales for the day. I've made the move back West and started settling into the 9-5 lifestyle. I'm relishing the chance to get back into shape now that I have some free time and a multitude of rock to explore. I started up a membership at the local gym and had a chance to check out one of the smaller bouldering areas just outside town. It had some good sized granite eggs a la Bishop, though more on the slabby side. It was a great opportunity to get my footwork dialed in on some micro-edges.

"Over all my trip was one of the best trips I’ve had. At first things were a bit grim in the Gramps. 10+ days of rain will get anyone down. But as soon as I was back in Sydney the sun was out and I climbed almost every day for the next 2 and a half weeks. Well I still had to put in some rest days but not that many. I needed to make up for time spent waiting to see it the rain would stop."

I’ve been in two different climbing areas, Squamish (Canada) and Rifle (Colorado). In January 2010 I bought my flight to the US and Canada and I decided to go on a climbing trip of two months on my own. This was the best decision I made in a long time. Sean's Roof - Peak District

This tiny route was put up waaay back when lycra was still acceptable (the 90s) by Jerry Moffatt. Since then is has seen a few repeats, but over the last 10 years it has basically never dried out, therefore never had any real attention. Originally it was given french 8c til Malc Smith crushed it and said 8b+ maximum. Apparently it has lost some holds since then, making it a bit harder. Whatever, the climbing is brilliant, technical, sustained and horizontal!

We arrived well in Oslo! But there was still a long way to go. We had to wait 1,5h to get a rented car. At the airport we met Daila Ojeda and we drove 6 hours till we reached the meeting point which was only 290km away. Finally we arrived at 2 am and met the rest of the German team, Jule Wurm, Jan Hojer, Christian Popien and Jeremias Groß and got a very nice fishsoop.
