Winter Climbing in Switzerland - Phillip Schaal

Winter Climbing in Switzerland - Phillip Schaal
February 23, 2012 -

After arriving in Switzerland to one of the “coldest,” European week in many years, We were faced with a lot of snow to deal with. The snow and the cold did not put us off. We spent the first few days cleaning the snow of boulders, and climbing what we could. Funny how cold is interpreted depending on where you are from. It was cold when I arrived no doubt. But to hear the locals say “the coldest,” reminded me of how cold the winters are in The States. Soon enough the weather started...

Weekend Bouldering - Greig Seitz
February 22, 2012 -  Greig Seitz

This past weekend, as I mentioned before, I got the opportunity to go climbing at Rotary Park. We climbed there Thursday , Friday, and Saturday. My main goal was to send a problem called Silver Leaf. While we were up there, we also got on a few other boulders. Overall, we had a nice weekend.

I just finished my last workout before Nationals.  Where has the time gone?  Life got busy (or busier) after the Dark Horse Championships, and somehow it’s already time for another comp.  Crazy how time works like that….

The Moment When You Know… My two chalky hands matched on a small crimp, my right foot smearing on the wall. I began to jump towards a two-finger pocket… I stuck it!! Only one problem, I stuck it with one finger looking at my feet dangling below. I soon came to the conclusion that I was holding my whole body with one finger. I dropped onto the dusty crash pads with a sharp feeling running through my finger to my forearm. My mind was scattered in thoughts, overwhelming in emotions, and shocked in pain. I began to take my...

It's been a busy last few weeks and when I say busy, I mean LOTS OF CLIMBING!  All types, actually.  A few weeks ago, I had the urge to head out Trad climbing and found myself dicing out a send on the Evictor (5.12d) in Eldorado Canyon.  Photographer Greg Mionske captured some decent footage of the send:

I'd never climbed in Red Rocks before, so I didn't really know what to expect. My first day in town I was solo and guideless out at the boulders, and it was an interesting experience. I don't often climb alone; I gain a lot of motivation from the motivation of others and usually find it hard to get psyched by myself. Plus it's always nice to be spotted. But this time was different, it was strangely rejuvenating. I've found myself climbing solely for the pureness of climbing this fall/winter, and it was heightened even more going out alone. Like...
