My Project in the Rain - Joseph Gifford

My Project in the Rain - Joseph Gifford
February 28, 2012 -

Lately I have been working on my project (Irreverent Youth 13.d) at Reimers Ranch in Austin, TX. I've only tried it about four or five times and I know I can send it next go but the only problem is that the weather in Austin has been terrible and raining every weekend for the past three weeks, so I’ve just been climbing at the rock gym on the weekends which is good for training but can get boring. I also can’t try Irreverent for awhile because I competed in adult bouldering nationals and i am going to youth...

Spain Bound! A MUERTE!!! - Sasha DiGiulian

Spain Bound! A MUERTE!!! - Sasha DiGiulian
February 27, 2012 -

Today I will be flying to Barcelona, Spain with 3Strings Media (Keith Ladzinski and Andy Mann) to film a video for Adidas. Spain boasts the highest concentration of difficult sport climbs in the world and is current home to several World-Renowned climbers, including American Chris Sharma and Spain-natives Dani Andrada, Ramon Julian-Puiblique, Edu Marin-Garcia, and many more! I plan on climbing first in Siurana, then in Oliana. In both areas there is a high concentration of challenging, beautiful routes that I am excited to try, ranging from crimpy faces to long tufa gems. Both areas are new to me...

I may have been subjected to rendezvous with the overly rock climbing inclined for a number of years now, but I still manage to be impressed with the level climbing is at today after days like yesterday. A crag like Oliana in Spain isn’t for your beginner or even intermediate climber. The grandiose blue and tan tufa streaked wall homes a hand full of warm-ups (11d and up), and gives your 12+/13- climber a few classic and stunning lines. Beyond these routes the grades jump drastically into the 13+ to hard 5.14 range, in which there are a disproportionate...

Back in Boulder - Ben Spannuth

Back in Boulder - Ben Spannuth
February 27, 2012 -

Being back in Boulder has been great. No matter how long I leave for I feel like a haven't missed a beat on Tues and Thurs nights at CATS and bouldering with the strong guys here is always motivating to become more powerful. Matty Hong and Jon Cardwell in particular are killing it right now and doing boulders I could barely, if even, do the moves on. In addition to probably too many gym sessions, I've made it outside a few times to see my first few real days of winter and down to Colorado Springs...

ABS Youth Nationals - Michaela Kiersch

ABS Youth Nationals - Michaela Kiersch
February 27, 2012 -  Michaela Kiersch

So ABS Youth Nationals are coming up this weekend! I am really psyched to go to Colorado Springs to compete. I've been training for bouldering since September and I feel confident in my ability right now. I've been going to the gym 6 days a week and doing various chin up, campus, system board, and hangboard workouts. It's been a long season and I'm really psyched to see how it's going to turn out! Aside from the competing, I am also excited to see all of my close friends. Over the years, I've been...

The photo issue of Rock and Ice will be landing in your mailboxes shortly. The photo issue is always my favorite and this year’s does not disappoint. To my surprise there is a full-page, black and white, photo of me towards the end of the photo section. The caption says the photo was taken on Apocalypse in Rifle, CO. This particular shot however, was actually taken on Simply Read, the route two left of Apocalypse. I know this, because it’s a route I’ll never forget, a route that challenged me for two seasons before finally, and unexpectedly, coming together...
