Summer Training and the Youth World Championships - Shannon Russell

Summer Training and the Youth World Championships - Shannon Russell
August 27, 2013 -  Shannon Russell

This summer was pretty much dedicated to training for worlds. After a week off from climbing right after the youth national championships I received an invite for the youth world championship to be held in Victoria, B.C. in late August. From then on it was pretty much crunch time for training. Since we had 5 members from Vertical World make US team this year there were plenty of training partners. Unfortunately, the only time I could go to the gym was in the late evening because of work, so must of the time I was training with my two...

Youth World Championship!!! - Delaney Miller

Youth World Championship!!! - Delaney Miller
August 26, 2013 -

Last weekend I competed in the youth world championship in Victoria, Canada. It was a fantastic comp! It was an emotional, exciting week and I feel so blessed to have experienced it! I stayed with the US team in the Victoria University dorms, which were not far from the climbing wall. It was incredible to really connect and bond with all the other US team members. I will never forget the memories and relationships that were formed! Before the competition began, I was honestly in a very depressed mood. I was upset to be leaving my beloved home, friends,...

Finally Feeling Fully Healed! - Sam Hayden

Finally Feeling Fully Healed! - Sam Hayden
August 26, 2013 -

I'm finally feeling back up to the strength I was at before I broke my tibia last August. I can't believe it's taken this long. Throughout the entire process I have kept climbing but the leg never felt like it was back up to speed until now. Comp season for bouldering last fall was a wash due to the broken bone and then I came down with a bug at regionals and attempted to climb with a high fever...didn't work out so well! The last 6 months I've been focused on getting back up to full strength,...

Free soloing a vertical cliff at 350 meters elevation is not where you will normally find me climbing. The difference between free climbing and free soloing is that, while free climbing you have protection and a rope so if you fall the fatality risk is actually very low; whereas, if you fall doing the latter, the fatality risk is almost certain. What keeps me from feeling inclined to free solo are the uncontrollable aspects of the sport. While climbing, it is beautiful to feel in complete control of yourself and your movements – to feel aware of your surroundings...

New Experience Gives a New Perspective - Kegan Minock
August 24, 2013 -  Kegan Minock

I have been climbing for nearly a decade and this past week I had done (or attempted to do!) something I have never done before. No, it wasn't my first 8b boulder problem or sending my hardest sport route, it was something much more meaningful. I had tried a boulder problem that has not been climbed before. It seems like every week we hear about these amazing athletes claiming the First Ascent of some new futuristic climb. Well, this was my first experience with developing my own "Futuristic" climb.

I left Texas with a packed bug, a cup of coffee, and a bittersweet feeling. I'm headed off to Canada for the Youth World Championship and then I go to Colorado to begin school at Colorado State University. I know my future in Colorado will be an incredible adventure, but I can't help but feel sad to leave my southern home. I'm leaving some incredible people behind and they will definitely be missed! My parents have always been so supportive and encouraging! They've always been there for me and have never stopped telling me to pursue my dreams. Kim...
