We were just passing through on our way from Nationals in Portland, OR to Bishop, CA. As soon as Nationals were done we all packed into the van (16 people and a large dog in a 15 passenger van) and started our drive through the night. We arrived just as the sun was rising and spent the day bouldering in the historical Camp 4. I was most honored to attend the Pan Am Champs after taking the win last year in Chia, Columbia. I raced on my trusty Orange 224 with a newly rebuilt Marzocchi 888 by Factory Ronnie. I was able to check out my new Five Ten Maltese Falcon clip shoes and boy were they smokin’ hot. I was immediately comfortable in the shoes and comfortable clipping in. Conditions this time of year can be great when you know what is good at the right time. Usually when the weather heats up the options are on Monkey Face, the backside of Smith, the Aggro Gully, and last but not least, the fantastic basalt gorge. Melloblocco is Europe’s largest outdoor climbing festival and the event is situated in a gorgeous mountain-town that is encompassed by enormous granite rock faces and lush green valley. Smaller granite boulders litter the landscape as well and these boulders were the focus of the event. I had five days of great climbing in the sun, and I really enjoyed it. All the hard training the last couple of months, has caused me a finger injury. No, I didn't really strike gold, but a perfect April weekend on the Illinois River is almost the same...maybe better.  Since the Illinois is either known for it's crystal clear water, beautiful scenery, and exciting whitewater or it's horror stories of being stuck on a raging river that quickly rose with a single rain storm, we jumped at the chance to hit it with a perfect 2000cfs level and a forecast of sun.
