"This past weekend I was fortunate enough to be able to compete again at the ABS National Championships in Alexandria VA. Because of competitions, I’ve been fortunate to have met a lot of really cool and strong climbers that I now call friends. I love meeting new faces at local comps and seeing old ones at the big comps. Even with all the hard core competing that goes on at these events they are still my friends…no matter the rankings.
This season is my 9th year of competing at rock climbing. Every season I see more and more kids enter the competition scene or hear about new up-and-coming climbers sending really hard outside. I must admit, I’m always on 8a.nu and the USAC’s rankings checking out kids my age and comparing myself to them. Going to a National Event like this past weekend is a good way to actually see how I compare to the best in the county.
The Male Youth A (16-17) category is honestly the powerhouse in youth competitive climbing this year (I believe that for the Youth World Championships, too). There were a ton of climbers at ABS11 Nationals that I had never seen before that proved to be a lot stronger than I was expecting. It took a lot of hard work keeping up with them this year and the rope season is just getting started. I’m seriously honored to have placed 2nd and made the 2010 US Team for Bouldering; and even more honored that I got to share the podium with my two really good, old friends Josh Levin (1st) and Charlie Andrews (3rd).
Congratulations to them, Connor MacDonald (4th) and Andrew Kim (5th) who also made US Team for MYA, along with everyone else in my category. They all climbed really well. After seeing my competition at ABS, I’m super motivated to train for SCS, as I’m sure the category will be even tougher with more at stake. Thank you Five Ten® for all the support, you guys are great!"
