I finally got my first outdoor 12d and then sent another 12d soon afterwards. The climbs were the same grade but the experiences were very different.
My First Outdoor 12d’s - Seth Rogers
My first outdoor 12d was The Gift at Red Rocks. I had spent 3 days last year projecting the climb but always fell on the heartbreaker crux at the end. (I wrote about it in my blog.) This time, it took me a climb and a fall to remember the sequence and then I sent it on the next try. It feels so good to finish a project!
Not long after Red Rocks, I went to the Gold Wall, near Jamestown, California with climbing buddy and 5.10 athlete Nick Bradley. There I onsighted Golden Showers, a very endurance based 12d. At 110 feet, it was exactly twice as high as The Gift and there were many times I thought I couldn’t make it but I did.
These two climbs are my proudest sends outdoors because they remind me that I can push myself and climb better than I think I can.
