To the People Who've Been There from the Start! - Delaney Miller

To the People Who've Been There from the Start! - Delaney Miller
August 23, 2013 -

I left Texas with a packed bug, a cup of coffee, and a bittersweet feeling. I'm headed off to Canada for the Youth World Championship and then I go to Colorado to begin school at Colorado State University. I know my future in Colorado will be an incredible adventure, but I can't help but feel sad to leave my southern home. I'm leaving some incredible people behind and they will definitely be missed! My parents have always been so supportive and encouraging! They've always been there for me and have never stopped telling me to pursue my dreams. Kim Puccio and Matt Dendy have been my coaches from the start. They've pushed me in countless ways to become both a stronger competitor and a stronger person. I am so thankful for everything everyone has done for me!

Growing up, my parents used to always say "You can do anything you put your mind to." Many who are experienced in the real world would probably argue that it is a somewhat deceptive phrase, but I stand by it 100%. My parents taught me how to always have a positive attitude and to never give up on my endeavors. I may fail a hundred times at something, but I will never stop believing that I can do it. Period. Others may say something is impossible, but I believe anything can be done with enough hard work and determination. When life gives me lemons, I make grape juice just to show the world that it can be done. I thank my parents for instilling this attitude in me and for always supporting me.

I first met Kim at the Canyons of Frisco climbing gym, which is about 15 minutes from where I live. I had just started Pre-Team and she was in the gym coaching Team that night. I remember her telling me to trust my feet more as she explained to me how to smear in a dihedral. After she gave me some beta and a few words of encouragement I sent the boulder problem. While she probably does not remember this moment, it was one that certainly stuck with me. Kim has always been there for me to offer beta, a belay, or some advice (regardless of whether it was wanted or not!). Her tough-love style of coaching has pushed me to be bold and committed in my climbing. She belayed me countless weekends and instilled in me a drive to get stronger. I attribute so much of my climbing to her will always be grateful for having her in my life!

Matt started being my coach a few years after I began my climbing career, but he quickly made up for lost time. I started taking private lessons from him every Saturday and I learned how to really train myself. He was relentless in pushing me to go for hard moves without hesitation. I got a little emotional at times as I pushed through each workout that he threw at me. I laugh now to know that he used to purposefully try to make me cry. If that's not dedication, I don't know what is! Thanks Matt for always caring!

There are many other people I could talk about here but I'd be sitting here for days! Thanks everyone who has helped me to become who I am today and who has been there for me despite my flaws. I love y'all and will always miss you!
