Durango Bouldering in Turtle Lake - Jena Lupia

January 27, 2013 -  Jena Lupia

I have been in Durango, Colorado bouldering and exploring new areas. Turtle lake has been my favorite place here so far. Driving up to the bouldering from the road is definitely a plus. The weather has been very hit or miss and the new snow has created lots of mud and ice. My first day up here was mostly just exploring and getting adjusted to the skin friendly rock. Durango has these huge towering boulders everywhere with some of the best quality movement I have experienced in a while.

The town of Durango has a quaint atmosphere as well as quick access to many bouldering areas. Turtle lake in particular has beautiful lines with many established climbs in close quarters. The less than 2minute hike has an appeal all of its own, and not to mention it is ten minutes away from the town of Durango.  Despite the mud and puddles under most of the boulders, We made a quick purchase of a tarp to lay down at the base of the boulders to keep our pads and shoes dry. This defiantly  made the climbing more manageable. Even though the weather has not been ideal I have tried to make the best out of it and having a ton of fun in the process. Most of the boulders at turtle lake were wet but there was one steep face that stayed mostly dry. I'm psyched on pretty much everything this boulder has to offer.
