Finishing Up Fall - Francesca Metcalf

December 04, 2012 -  Francesca Metcalf

This fall, I've finally been able to get outside enough to not consider myself a full time gym rat. I've been hanging out at local bouldering areas like Horse Pens 40 and Little Rock City almost every weekend and I've been able to find some long term projects. Luckily the weather still hasn't turned very cold here, so climbing outside is still possible, even for someone as wimpy as I am when it comes to cold. Over the Thanksgiving break, I got to do some more climbing, but a little farther from home than usual. My family and I went to Barcelona to visit my sister, who is living there right now. She and her boyfriend are taking a few months off from school and work to travel and climb around the United States and Europe. The climbing there was much different than anything I have seen in the U.S. Everything was super pockety, which made the climbing very interesting, and trying to distinguish the usable pockets from everything else made it a bit time consuming.

I'm back in the States now, and back to the old grind. I survived what we like to call “Hell Week” at Tech, which unfortunately always lives up to its name, and I'm in the midst of “Dead Week”, the week before finals when you basically want to kill yourself. But, if I survive this week and my four finals next week, I get to go back home to Boston for winter break and the Dark Horse! I'm so excited to climb at this comp again- it's always so much fun.
