In September the ABS competition season started. I kicked off the year setting for a local competition at Miramont Lifestyle Fitness. As one of the route-setters I love comp season.
We strip entire sections of bouldering so we get a clean palate to work with. It is fun to pick out holds and the type of movements I want and put everything together into something completely new and different. As one of the shorter setters I don’t have to change my style very much to accommodate the youth climbers. Plus, I get to help fore-run everything to check for reach. Come competition day we have been working all week to set, tweak, and finalize all the problems. I am always tired on comp day but the music, psych, and amazing atmosphere in the gym keeps me pumped all day long. This year we had over 185 climbers, including about 130 youth climbers. Those kids crushed!!! I always enjoy meeting all the climbers, some I know and recognize from years past and some are brand new; but we all have a common bond, a love for climbing. Working at a gym, especially during comp season, allows me to share my passion for climbing!
