For whitewater paddlers in the Northwest, the Upper Wind River Festival kicks off the season as the first downriver race of the year. Paddlers, full of nervous energy, show up wondering where they will stack up, and if their winter-time training will pay off. A part of the Western Whitewater Championship Series, the festival features a 3 mile downriver race for all river-craft (kayak, raft and cataraft) through various class IV rapids: various boulder gardens, ledge drops, slides.

This year, under sunny skies, over 50 paddlers came out to the festival to race on March 24, 2012.  Race Categories included: Short boat kayak (under 8' 11"), long boat kayak (no length restriction), R2 Raft, and Cataraft. Each category would feature a mass start with seeding determined by an arduous, very confusing bout of rock-paper-scissors.

For the third year in a row, I took part in the short boat downriver race. Racing a brand new, ruby-red, Wave Sport Diesel 80, I was feeling good about my color coordination, and hoped that would transfer into some solid racing. Unique to the Wind Race, on "go" paddlers bolted downstream in a mass of unorganized chaos, fighting for the lead position. The race course itself features rapids such as, "Initiation", "Ram's Horn", "Balls to the Wall Right",  and "Climax", all living up to their name and providing some sort of carnage. Turns out my color coordination transferred into some solid racing, placing 1st in the women's short boat kayak division, and 5th overall in the short boat division (men and women combined).

ORT, Next Adventure, and Luke Spencer- Thanks for organizing such an awesome event! Can't wait till next year!
