I finally made it back to Fontana California for the 2012 Fontana City Nationals. It has been probably 6 years since I have raced at Fontana and it seems to be the same as it always was. The track we raced on was almost the same as I remembered with some areas of the downhill a little smoothed out. The infamous wall was still long and grueling and took all my will power to pedal to the end. The venue was filled with so much factory support and race teams, such as: Marzocchi, Five Ten, Unique Sports, KHS, ODI and many more.
For this race I hopped on an Orange 224 DH Bike, just barely getting it completely built up for the last half of practice on the first day. It has a simplistic feel to it and rolled over all the huge boulders as smooth as a linkage bike. Practice times were pretty short windows and I was able to get in a few runs before race time. I had my work cut out for me with the field of girls who showed up. There were about 8 of us and we all were going for the win. I barely eked out a win over Gabriela Williams with a time of 2:25 after a few slips of the pedal and some sloppiness on the top downhill section. A couple hours before the race the skies opened up and gave the dirt a little water. By the time the Pro women started it was sprinkling all the way through to the Pro Men’s race. When the entire racing was done the skies completely opened up and reeked havoc on everyone and everything. Awards were done in the rain and packing up to go home was done in the rain. Overall the weekend was a success for the iXS/Unique Sports team with a win from me, Mikey Haderer in 16th and Dante Harmony in 24th.
Thanks to Lance Tueller, Lewis Hollingworth and Punty
