Cali High Ballin'!! - Alex Johnson

January 19, 2012 -

Go big or go home? Yes!!! This season is starting out as the season of highballs. I've been subconsciously attracted to the tallest, raddest boulders around!

Every climb I've been doing lately has been at least 18 feet off the deck, it's exhilarating to be pushing my limits at such heights and my sights are only being set higher.

Last week I went out and grabbed the Second Ascent of a classic super-highball Golden Age V9 in Bishop, CA.

In addition to that, my highball ticks have been split between Bishop and Yosemite Valley.

One of my proudest feats thus far has been the beautiful arete perfectly perched atop Buttermilk Mountain, The Ninth. So far it has been the "headiest" thing I've climbed. The other boulders have been tall, with pretty flat safe-ish landings. The Ninth has a terrifying rocky death landing!

I took a pretty gnarly fall off a big ol' boulder in Yosemite a couple of days ago and have thought it wise to take a couple rest days and hot tub soaks.

There are a few things that I've had my eye on up here, and it'll be interesting to see if I finish them off, or get carried out on a stretcher... Stay tuned!!

None of that stretcher crap! The MN crew wants you to come back and open up new problems that aren't so terrifyingly tall, just hard. Don't break anything before then!
