Winter Update from Jack Reading

Winter Update from Jack Reading

November 24, 2010 -  Guest

All of a sudden it’s mid November and I’ve no idea where the time has gone. It only feels like yesterday when I was finishing my racing season out in warm sunny Whistler! Now I’m well settled into a cold, predominantly wet, Northern English winter here in the UK. My masters’ degree which I started in September is going well. It means I have to finish the whole of my final year of study (which under normal circumstances would take until June) by February. I then move to Newcastle to start my first job.

This is making it hard for me to ride much. However I’m hitting the gym twice a week with my strength and conditioning coach which is available to me through the Manchester University scholarship scheme and this is keeping me in great shape. I’m getting out on the downhill bike once a week and because of my busy schedule I’m really appreciating the opportunity when it arises and making the most of it.

Recently I’ve had days at Foel in Wales, Hamsterley Forest and today we were at one of our local haunts, Wharncliffe woods. This is what prompted me to right this update, as today was so good I want to shout about it! One of the lads, Gee Hallam, has spent the last two weeks digging his arms off and to a fantastic result! The track he has put together isn’t overly long but boy is it good! Really fast and such a good laugh. One particular corner was awesome as you came into it at 90 degrees going super fast, then slammed into it and got spat out before you knew it (see picture). We call it a ‘power bang.’

The rest of the winter (providing it doesn’t snow too much) will be much the same for me. I’ll be training as hard and as much as possible and already have my sights firmly fixed on the first round of the BDS in March 2011. After my very unlucky end to the season snapping my chain on the sprint to the finish at the final BDS which cost me a podium finish, I’m hungry to get back on it next year and take that top result I deserve here in the UK! Never mind getting out to some more World Cups and getting in and amongst the best!

So that’s all from me for now. I’ve got to get back to some more University work after I’ve spent the whole day slacking playing on my Ellsworth J man it was good though! NB Today we were filming so watch out on Thisisheffield.co.uk for the next installment and I tell you, from a rider’s point of view it’ll be a good one!

All the best. Jack
