Femme 45 heads to California for CaliBurnFest 2010.

To wrap up summer paddling and head into fall, one last hurrah is held on the Burnt Ranch Gorge section of the Trinity River in California.  With low water at home, we decided to make the trek down for a little fun.

The event was kicked off with a big air surf competition at Camel Rock outside of Arcata. We headed to the beach bright and early, but the waves petered out pretty quick and we decided to move to a different beach in search of better surf.

Saturday was the downriver race.  The course was full of boofs and boulder gardens and dished out some pretty interesting lines at a couple of the rapids, resulting in 4 swims and a broken boat.

Dan Menton took first overall and in men’s long boat, while Justin Patt took men’s short boat.  For the ladies it was Kim Russell overall and women’s short boat, and Christie Glissmeyer in women’s long boat.

We decided to change it up a bit on Sunday before heading home and cruised over to the Pit River.  The Pit has scheduled releases throughout all of October, but unfortunately we got skunked.  We ended up be-bopping down low water class III and mazes of shrubbery, ending with a marginally runnable 30 footer.  It sure was a beautiful day though! Thanks California for a fun summer!
