I just came back from an incredible road trip through Canada and the northern parts of the United States. The last ten weeks contained a lot of climbing in various places and styles.

Starting in Squamish, the Chief gave us the possibility to send some wonderful boulder problems, to do multi-pitch routes at the Grand Wall and to get into the world of placing gear into cracks – a new and very exciting experience for me. Trad climbing attracted me throughout the trip.

Apart from those pure lines we traveled around for some bouldering at Leavenworth/Washington, pulled some jugs at the steep cave of Horne Lake/Vancouver Island and crimped small holds at Skaha/British Columbia.

To focus on trad climbing again we went to the City of Rocks/Idaho. This unique place took away all our remaining power. The great quantity and quality of those granite spires with all the nice cracks and bolted sport climbing routes showed us how different climbing can be compared to the Austrian Alps.

Despite all the rumours of America (big cars and people, tasteless Fast Food, coffee in a one litre paper cup,…) it’s definitly worth a trip, due to the great landscape, the fantastic climbing and the nice people. Just back in Austria the plan of going back there already exists.
