Beginning in May of 2010, The East Betas climbing team of Oakland, CA’s Great Western Power Company started small with only their coach Ryan Moon and three other members, but in a little over two years grew with two additional coaches (Sam Schwartz and Ari Oppenheimer) and a boastful sixteen teenage mega-crushers! With most of the students attending Oakland School for the Arts (OSA), an institution where the students are used to having an artistic focus and creative drive as early as the age of twelve, one could already tell that these teens were a talented bunch. Sometimes their talents are redirected to the numerous bake parties held for funsies or even the fundraising bake sales hosted once a year resulting in $600 each with proceeds going to shirts, hoodies, and chalk bags (provided by team sponsor, Organic Climbing) embroidered or screen printed with the official team logo. Although only a handful of teamsters try their luck at competing in member comps at Touchstone gyms, a motivated few go for the gold crushing at local ABS events. It’s not the steel fingers or inability to get pumped that makes these kids East Bay greats, it’s the camaraderie and unique group dynamic that anyone watching will notice instantly. GO EAST BETAS!
