Arjan started climbing at age nine in his hometown, the small farming village of De Doorns, South Africa. For several years he focused on sport climbing competitions, interspersed with the occasional multi-pitch trad route. Within a few years he became one of the stronger South African youngsters, placing second in a European youth comp in 1998. Arjan really came into his own years later in 2010 when he made the crossover from route climbing to bouldering, settling into a rhythm at his home bouldering area, ROCKLANDS, South Africa. Focusing on nutrition and training, he achieved a new level for South African bouldering when he completed multiple 8b/8b+ projects during the 2010 season. He finished the year by sending his old nemesis, Mazewatee, an 8c+ sport climb FA’d by visiting mutant Adam Ondra the previous year. In summer he keeps form kitesurfing, surfing, freediving, hanggliding, mountainbiking and skydiving. Recently, Arjan has set up in Fontainebleau, France with frequent trips to Switzerland—creating for himself a year-round winter, free of the harsh African sun.
