The Stone Monkeys are climbers of various levels from the ambitious beginner to the advanced, nationally ranked climber ranging from 6 to 18 years old. Their home gym is Hangar 18-South Bay in Southern California. The Stone Monkeys Competition Team competes in the American Bouldering Series as well as the Sport Climbing Series, run by USA Climbing. The team is led by head coaches Deanna Lapen and Mary Acharon. The Stone Monkeys Junior Team is a development team coached by Laurel Shimamura, a Senior Stone Monkey.
The Stone Monkeys had a very successful 2011-12 bouldering season winning the Southern California Team Regional Championships in the American Bouldering Series. Many of the Stone Monkeys placed in the top three in their age category and two Stone Monkeys won the Regional Championships in their respective age category.
The Stone Monkeys have earned Regional Team Champions in sport climbing in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009. The Stone Monkeys are looking forward to the upcoming 2012 Sport Climbing Series with hopes of winning the team title back.
Head coaches Deanna and Mary feel that the Stone Monkeys Climbing Team not only helps children become better climbers, but also helps increase self-esteem and self-confidence while encouraging good sportsmanship and team camaraderie. Coaches Deanna and Mary are enthusiastic about the excitement that each new season brings.
